ELCO SYSTEMS MV SOLUTIONS AND FAULT CURRENT LIMITING SOLUTIONS

What are harmonics?

Harmonic is a component of a periodic wave having a frequency  that is an integral multiple of the fundamental power line frequency of 50 Hz.  For example, 150 Hx (3 x 50 Hz) and 250 Hz (5 x 50 Hz) is a 3rd and 5th order harmonic of the fundamental frequency. Depending on the impedances available on local grid, harmonic penetration level THDu > 3%, with corresponding THDi > 30% is generally a cause for serious consideration as these prevalent harmonics can interact with current network impedances to create a resonance circuit.

Consequences of high harmonic distortion level?

Harmonics can cause several problems such as :
  1. Transformers vibrations & getting overheated
  2. Significant Transient activity i.e. nuisance tripping in supply system protection relays and mechanical damage caused by suddence stoppage of heavy machines.
  3. Decreasing distribution capacity due to skin effect in cables
  4. Neutral conductors in 3-Phase balanced circuits getting overheated and / or burnt
  5. Failure of Power factor correction capacitors without series/detuned reactors
  6. Interference in telecommunication equipment
  7. Generator Hunting caused by frequency of the transient torque harmonics matching the machine oscillation natural frequency
  8. Supply Voltage distortion and increased lagging power factor
